Scientists investigated this question to find out whether spinach actually makes you strong, and why you shouldn't pour spinach into yourself in cans.
What Is Ecdysterone?
Ecdysterone is a natural phytoecdysteroid from the group of ecdysteroids. Ecdysteroids occur in the animal kingdom as hormones (zooecdysteroids). Their diverse tasks include, for example, monitoring the molting of insects. In the plant kingdom, ecdysteroids appear as secondary plant substances (phytoecdysteroids). Plants synthesize phytoecdysteroids to ward off their predators.
Researchers were astonished to find that ecdysterone has a different effect on the organisms of mammals and humans who eat these plants. Not only does it improve protein synthesis, it also improves the metabolism of fat and carbons. This finding led to the assumption that ecdysterone promotes muscle building in humans. In the meantime, numerous pharmacological effects of ecdysteroids have been found in several studies, which support this suspicion.
How Does Ecdysterone Work?The Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin) recently dealt with this question together with scientists from the Sport University Cologne and other experts. As part of a study sponsored by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the effects of ecdysterone were examined on 46 male test subjects. In the further course of the study, however, six subjects dropped out because they were missing or no longer available for over ten percent of the training units. The subjects were on average 25.6 years old and 181.9 cm tall. At the beginning of the study, they weighed an average of 80 kg.
The study ran over a period of ten weeks and the subjects were divided into four groups. The first group (Ec1) received 12 mg ecdysterone, the second group (Ec2) 48 mg ecdysterone (*). A placebo group received capsules without the active ingredient. Another control group also received capsules without active ingredient and, on top of that, did not take part in the training units that were completed by the other three groups.
The training consisted of three strength training sessions per week. A day of rest followed after the training. The subjects performed six dumbbell exercises in each training unit, which trained the entire body. In addition, the weight was continuously increased during the study.
At the end of the 10-week study, all three groups that had participated in the training sessions had improved their performance. On bench press, the placebo group saw an average increase of 3.59 percent (3.33 kg), the Ec1 group by 11.5 percent (9.58 kg) and the Ec2 group lifted 9.5 percent more (8.5 kg). The Ec1 group increased muscle mass by 1.58 kg and the Ec2 group by 2.03 kg. In contrast, the placebo group that had not exercised even lost 0.35 kg of muscle mass on average.
The participants who received ecdysterone were able to show a significant increase in maximum strength and confirmed the researchers' assumptions through their positive ecdysterone experiences.
Is Ecdysterone Dangerous?
Ecdysterone has now been tested in several studies. The participants in the study by the Free University of Berlin were also examined regularly. Her blood values were checked continuously, as was her urine. Neither harmful effects on the liver and kidney function nor hormonal changes were found.
Forms of Ecdysterone
Since ecdysteroids are natural active ingredients that can be found in the organisms of animals and plants, there is great scientific interest in ecdysteroids due to their special mode of action.
